Eastwood’s last confirmed interview ran in the first issue of The Metrograph, the print magazine associated with the downtown Manhattan movie house. In it, the Hollywood legend goes through his entire career, but didn’t directly touch on the subject of retirement. The journalist, Nick Pinkerton, did ask him about his ability to survive in a Hollywood that tends to get rid of people as soon as they are no longer useful. “That would be up to them, to the audiences, to answer,” Eastwood replied. “Up to the people on the outside. I just kind of go along.”

In 2021, when an interviewer from Parade asked if he was going to retire, he said, “I don’t think so.” He continued, “I’m always thinking about what I’m going to do next. I love to take someone’s idea, whether it’s a book or a play, and develop it. Maybe others want to make a few movies and then retire, and that’s fine. Maybe they have other things to do and keep busy with. I don’t. I love movies and I enjoy making them.”

Now that his retirement is Wikipedia-official, it might seem like Juror No. 2 will go down as his final film. But even those closest to Eastwood, who remains in good physical and mental shape, thought Cry Macho was going to be his last. Robert Lorenz, who produced several of his films, said as much in a 2024 interview with Movieweb.

“Honestly, I thought he would have stopped by now. He doesn’t need to do it,” Lorenz said. “I talked to him just before Juror #2. I’ve talked to him since then. But before that, when I talked to him, he said, ‘No, I don’t think I’m going to do anymore.’ And then the next thing I know he’s doing [Juror No. 2].” Lorenz revealed. “I wouldn’t be surprised if that is the last movie. But like I said, never say never. He’s always full of surprises, that guy.”
