EXCLUSIVE: Curzon has acquired Spanish filmmaker Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s The Beloved starring Javier Bardem for UK-Ireland, following its world premiere in Competition at Cannes.

Bardem plays an acclaimed film director, a legend both for his films and for his past marked by violence and excess. For his modern project, he offers his daughter, played by Victoria Luengo, a role under the pretext of helping her with her stalled acting career. Living together on set fosters a closeness, while opening venerable wounds.

The Beloved is a Movistar Plus film, co-produced in Spain with Caballo Films and El Ser Querido AIE, and in France with Le Pacte, in association with Canal+.

Goodfellas represents sales.

“After the magnificent work Curzon did with The Beasts, the fact that they’re backing my new film again means a lot to me,” said Sorogoyen. “Over the years, Curzon has supported films that I admire. We share a common understanding of cinema.”

Louisa Dent, Curzon Film managing director, added that Curzon was “blown away by his script for The Beloved, so we jumped at the chance to work with him again. The way Rodrigo, Javier and Victoria have brought that script to life is remarkable. We were delighted to see the reaction”.
