For the best part of half a century now, Tom Cruise has been the movie star. The man lives, breathes, loves, and makes movies quite unlike anybody else. And now, having recently been presented with a long overdue honorary Oscar for his services to cinema, the medium’s pre-eminent champion has taken to his socials today to share a pulse-quickening retrospective montage of his 46 years on the substantial screen — and a tantalising fresh glimpse at his latest movie, Alejandro G Iñárritu’s upcoming ‘comedy of catastrophic proportions’ Digger. Check it out below;

SHOW US THE MOVIESSS! Hoo boy, that was something, wasn’t it? As cinematic oeuvres go, the one celebrated here takes some beating. From sci-fi blockbusters (War Of The Worlds, Edge Of Tomorrow) to action-packed thrill rides (Mission: Impossible, Top Gun), and from legal dramas (A Few Good Men) to absurd comedies (Tropic Thunder) to powerhouse dramas (Rain Man, Born On The Fourth Of July) and pure classics (Jerry Maguire, Risky Business, Rock Of Ages), the man’s done it all. Or so we thought. Slapped on at the end of Cruise’s iconic moment stuffed career montage is a fresh few seconds of fresh Digger footage, teasing just a miniature bit more of a plum-suited, prosthetic-laden, white-haired Cruise as Digger Rockwell, the eccentric southern oil baron at the heart of Iñárritu’s latest. “When all else fails, you hit ’em with the truth,” zings Cruise’s Rockwell in the teaser. “Hit ’em with the hard truth. Just, bang bang bang!” Bang bang bang indeed, Mr. C!

A 35mm VistaVision epic — penned by the director alongside his Birdman collaborators Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolas Giacobone, and acclaimed playwright Sabina Berman — Digger looks set to find Cruise back in out-and-out comedy territory for the first time since Tropic Thunder, putting down the parachute and taking his foot off the motorbike-careening-off-a-cliff’s pedal to bring his live-wire energy to something wholly different. And, what’s more, he’s bringing Riz Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons with him for the ride, which will follow the ramifications of Digger Rockwell’s company triggering an ecological disaster with potentially nuclear consequences. Here’s hoping Digger is the bomb — and surely not a bomb — when it hits cinemas on 2 October. Before then though, keep ’em peeled for the film’s official trailer, dropping on 13 July…
