Neon has set Palme D’Or winner Fjord for an October 9 release in North America, positioning Cristian Mungiu’s family drama for an awards season push.
Neon used similar early-to-mid October slots to launch its previous Palme D’Or winners Parasite, Anatomy Of A Fall and Anora. Parasite and Anora went on to win the best picture Oscar in 2020 and 2025 respectively. Anatomy Of A Fall got a best picture Oscar nomination in 2024.
Mungiu’s English-language debut, Fjord stars Renate Reinsve and Sebastian Stan as a Romanian father and Norwegian mother who move with their children to a remote Norwegian village but become the focus of scrutiny when they are suspected of disturbing behaviour. The film is produced by Mobra Films of Romania, Why Not Productions or France and Eye Eye Pictures of Norway.
Neon acquired North American, UK and Australia/New Zealand rights to Fjord in May 2025. The UK rights were picked up from Neon by Picturehouse Entertainment at the start of this year’s Cannes festival. Goodfellas is handling international sales on the film.
Fjord is the seventh consecutive Cannes Palme D’Or winner to which Neon has held US rights, a run that began with Parasite and has also included It Was Just An Accident, Triangle Of Sadness and Titane.
Romanian filmmaker Mungiu won the Palme D’Or and the best foreign film Oscar (as it was then known) in 2008 for 4 Months, 3 Weeks And 2 Days.
