EXCLUSIVE: Thai filmmaker Phuttiphong Aroonpheng’s Venice premiere The Burning Giants has been boarded for sales by Paris-based Lucky Number.
The film is inspired by the true story of the murder of an environmental and Indigenous rights activist from the Karen group, an ethnic minority in the mountains of Thailand, who was chased away by forest rangers then killed after protesting the forced eviction of his village from a protected forest to make way for a national park.
The Burning Giants was shot in Thailand and stars Awat Ratanapintha, Pakapol Srirongmuang, Waywiree Ittianunkul and Tanutwut Rodpai.
The film is produced by Thailand’s Diversion alongside Singapore’s 13 Little Pictures, France’s Nord-Ouest Films and the Netherlands’ Sluizer Film Productions.
It is Phuttiphong’s third film after Manta Ray, which was named best film in Venice Horizons in 2018, and Morrison, which played at the Busan International Film Festival in 2023.
Lucky Number will also be in Venice with Sabu’s Taiwan-set detective comedy Arrested Memory starring Ethan Juan which is set to play out of competition.
