“This isn’t just about building a bunker. It’s about building something that will last.” Sony Classics revealed the teaser trailer for the film titled Bunker, an intriguing marital drama / social commentary thriller from the provocative French filmmaker Florian Zeller. He knows for his previous two films The Father and The Son, now he’s back this year with Bunker. This first premiered at the 2026 Venice Film Festival last month to many mixed to negative reviews (including mine). It also went on to play at Toronto, Zurich, London, Mill Valley, and Chicago Film Fests as well. When an architect accepts a morally ambiguous project – building a survivalist bunker for a tech billionaire – his wife begins to question their marriage after 17 years together. Bunker is a dramatic thriller examining the emotional & moral challenges faced by a couple as the anxieties of an increasingly uncertain world begin to reshape their marriage, exploring the fears, doubts and ethical dilemmas of these times. Starring the real life couple Javier Bardem & Penélope Cruz as Miguel & Sofia, with Stephen Graham, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Mark Gatiss, & Paul Dano as the tech dude (who makes an appearance in this teaser). Not a fan of this film for many reasons, worst of all that barely any of this concept actually works in the film. Hits theaters in the middle of this year’s awards season. Have a peek.
Here’s the initial teaser trailer for Florian Zeller’s film Bunker, direct from SPC’s YouTube:
“I wrote Bunker for Penélope Cruz & Javier Bardem, who were both the starting point and inspiration for this project — not only because they are among the most gifted actors working today, but also because they are an iconic couple. I wanted to explore love, fidelity and forgiveness while placing the audience in a position of deliberate ambiguity. What exactly are we being invited to witness? A glimpse of reality? Fiction? Or a meta-examination of the truth? In that sense, Bunker invites us to follow the journey of reconciliation between a man and a woman who love each other, but who, at life’s midpoint, must now find a new way to express that love.” –Director Florian Zeller
Miguel (Javier Bardem), a successful London architect, considers a prestigious offer to build a survivalist bunker for a tech billionaire. The project causes his wife Sofia (Penélope Cruz) to ponder their relationship of 17 years as they are drawn deeper into a life of extreme wealth, paranoia, and fear. The intrusion of an unsettling neighbor becomes another source of anxiety at home. Bunker is written and directed by French theater director / filmmaker Florian Zeller, director of the two films The Father and The Son previously, plus acclaimed plays in London & New York. It’s inspired by “El hombre de al lado” from Mariano Cohn & Gastón Duprat. Produced by Fernando Bovaira, Alice Dawson, Simón de Santiago, Federica Sainte-Rose, Florian Zeller. It first premiered at the 2026 Venice Film Festival this fall playing in the Main Competition (read our review). Sony Pictures Classics debuts Zeller’s Bunker film in select US theaters starting January 15th, 2027 early next year; along with an awards season run briefly on December 11th, 2026 coming up.
