Ever since Rian Johnson’s Knives Out threequel Wake Up Dead Man was first announced last May, we have been diligently looking for clues about what the return of Daniel Craig’s Foghorn Leghorn accented Southern sleuther Benoit Blanc may entail, probing U2 lyrics and considering typefaces like nobody’s business. Tonight though, at Netflix’s TUDUM event, we not only got confirmation of the movie’s release date — 12 December — but also a tantalising teaser trailer for Netflix’s biggest murder-mystery movie of 2025 (sorry Thursday Murder Club!). Check out the Southern Gothically infused first proper look at Johnson’s star-studded latest below;
Anyone else got chills watching that, or is it just us? “The impossible crime,” narrates Craig’s Benoit Blanc over foreboding shots of church steeples and graveyards, “for a man of reason this is the Holy Grail.” So far, so sinister. But if your “Is this actually going to be a supernatural Knives Out yarn?” senses are tingling, then maybe think again. Among the movie’s many glimpsed suspects/victims here (Glenn Close! Mila Kunis! Josh Brolin! Jeremy Renner! Andrew Scott!), Josh O’Connor’s Reverend Jud Duplenticy stands out as not only a man of the cloth, but a man of many hidden sins. As Blanc says “This was dressed as a miracle, it was just a murder — and I solve murders,” we see the Challengers star seemingly slashing wildly, face strewn with mud and rain. Hmm…
Is the Reverend our killer? Why is Glenn Close on her knees praying as police cars circle round? Are there forces beyond this world at work here? And can we get a link for Blanc’s fit here? (Seriously, that man’s looking piercing as hell here, even by the gentleman sleuther’s high sartorial standards.) We’ll find out the answers to at least a few of these questions when Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery hits our screens on 12 December, 2025. We plan on buttressing ourselves in our houses until then, just in case O’Connor finds us in the meantime…
