A24 obtains the distribution rights for the new film “Queer” directed by Luca Guadagnino and starring Daniel Craig. This announcement comes ahead of the world premiere of the film at the eighty-first Venice Film Festival. The movie also features Drew Starkey, Leslie Mannville, Jason Schwartzman, Andre Orsuta, Michael Boremans, and David Laury.
Inspired by William S. Burroughs’ novel of the same name, “Queer” unfolds in Mexico City during the 1950s. The storyline follows William Lee, an expatriate American in his late forties living a reclusive life amidst a small American community. However, when a young man named Eugene Allerton arrives in the city, William finds himself finally forming a meaningful relationship with someone.
In a joint statement, Craig and Guadagnino expressed their enthusiasm for partnering with the bold and dynamic studio A24. They stated, “We are thrilled that our film has found a home with a bold, vibrant, and pioneering studio like A24.” “It is an honor for us to finally bring Burroughs’ legendary novel to the screen for the first time, and we feel a great sense of gratitude and excitement to present it alongside our exceptional collaborators. We could not ask for better partners on this journey.”
The screenplay for the film was penned by Justin Kurzel, who also collaborated with Guadagnino on the film “Challengers,” which starred Zendaya.
