Academy unveils 10 shortlists for 2025 Oscars | News

The Academy has unveiled the 10 shortlists for the 97th Academy Awards in March, with Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Perez, Mohammad Rasoulof’s The Seed Of The Sacred Fig and Walter Salles’s I’m Still Here among the international feature film category heavyweights.

Besides the French, German and Brazilian contenders, the list includes Mati Diop’s Dahomey for Senegal, Rich Peppiatt’s Kneecap for Ireland, Maura Delpero’s Vermiglio for Italy, Sandhya Suri’s Santosh for the UK, and Matthew Rankin’s Universal Language for Canada.

Europe accounts for 10 or two-thirds of the shortlist, Africa and Middle East two, and Americas two, while Thailand is the sole Asian representative.

Documentary contenders include No Other Land co-directed by Basel Adra, Hamdan Ballal, Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, Shiori Itō’s Black Box Diaries, and Emily Kassie’s Sugarcane.

Emilia Perez, which Netflix has for the US and UK, makes the shortlists six times in total including categories like make-up and hairstyling, score and song. Universal’s Wicked appears four times, while Warner Bros/Legendary’s Dune: Part Two, 20th Century Studios’ Alien Romulus, and Paramount’s Gladiator II appear three times each, including on the visual effects shortlist.

Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot also secured three slots.

The nominations will be announced on January 17, 2025, and the 97th Oscars ceremony takes place on March 2, 2025.

Fifteen films will advance to the next round of voting in the international feature film category for the 97th Academy Awards. Films from 85 countries and regions were eligible in the category. Academy members from all branches were invited to participate in the preliminary round of voting and must have met a minimum viewing requirement to be eligible to vote in the category. In the nominations round, Academy members from all branches are invited to opt in to participate and must view all 15 shortlisted films to vote.

Ten films will advance in the makeup and hairstyling category for the 97th Academy Awards.  All members of the Academy’s makeup artists and hairstylists branch will be invited to view excerpts and interviews with the artists from each of the shortlisted films on January 11, 2025. Branch members will vote to nominate five films for final Oscar consideration.

Ten films will advance in the sound category for the 97th Academy Awards.  All eligible members of the sound branch vote to determine the shortlist and the nominees.  Academy members will be invited to view excerpts from each of the shortlisted films beginning January 9, 2025, in the San Francisco Bay area, followed by London, Los Angeles and New York on January 11, 2025. Branch members will vote to nominate five films for final Oscar consideration.
