Before Adrien Brody’s acceptance speech came out of his mouth at the Oscars 2025—where he had just won best actor—something else had to come out first. That would be the piece of gum he was chewing. Luckily, his partner, designer Georgina Chapman, was there to support.
On his way up the steps at the Dolby Theatre to collect his second best actor statuette, Brody appeared to panic about his gum. Swallow it? No; he knows that you never come back from that. Talk around it? Shan’t do. Nope: he pulled it out of his mouth and tossed it right into the waiting hands of Chapman, who dashed after Brody when he got up.
Brody won the award for his work in The Brutalist. He previously won this same category in 2003, for The Pianist.
Brody thanked Chapman and her two “beautiful children,” India and Dash, in his speech. Not specifically for the gum-catching, but for welcoming him into their life. “Popsy’s coming home a winner!” he said jubilantly.

Brody and Chapman, co-founder of the fashion label Marchesa, have been romantically linked since 2019. They officially confirmed their relationship in June 2021, one month before Chapman finalized her divorce from disgraced mega-producer Harvey Weinstein. Weinstein is father of her two children.
Chapman, Brody said in his acceptance speech, “reinvigorated my own self worth, but also my values and our values.”
Chapman and Weinstein wed in December 2007. Chapman filed for divorce from him in 2017, when several women came forward to accuse Weinstein of sexual assault and misconduct. In February 2023, Weinstein was convicted of rape and sentenced to 16 years. He is serving out a sentence at Rikers Island, in addition to further pending charges.
Brody and Chapman have been at each other’s sides throughout this awards season—with Chapman typically clad in her own designs on the red carpet. Brody has thanked her often in his acceptance speeches over the past several weeks. At the BAFTAs, he called her “an angel.”
From discarding his gum to waving off the “wrap it up” exit music, Brody clearly planned to make the most of his moment on the Academy Awards stage, as Chapman beamed at him from the front row.
“I’m wrapping up, please, please, please, I will wrap up,” he said when the orchestra began to play. “Please turn the music off. I’ve done this before, it’s not my first rodeo. Thank you.”
He urged the audience to “not let hate go unchecked.”
“Okay, I’ll get out of here,” he said in conclusion. “I love you. I appreciate you all. Let’s fight for what’s right. Keep smiling, keep loving one another. Let’s rebuild together. Thank you.”
