Alexander Skarsgård‘s career has been relatively serene since starring in the recurring role of Lukas Matsson in the final season of Succession, but his next project just got a thrilling fresh look. Skarsgård stars alongside David Dastmalchian and Sabrina Wu in Murderbot, the upcoming space sci-fi thriller series releasing on May 16. Apple TV+ has officially released the first trailer for Murderbot, which can be found below and shows Skarsgård playing an SEC robot who has hacked his programming and gone rogue after acquiring free will. The series is based on Martha Wells’ best-selling book series The Murderbot Diaries. The first images of Murderbot were officially released a few days ago, and the series was written, directed, and produced by the Weitz brothers, who most recently worked on Moving On (Jane Fonda) and Fatherhood (Kevin Hart).

Best known for his role as Eric Northman in True Blood, Alexander Skarsgård has also starred in HBO original dramas like Big Little Lies and $350 million-grossing blockbusters such as The Legend of Tarzan. He could also recently be seen in an episode of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, the Prime Video series starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine. This also wasn’t the first time he worked with Glover — the two had experience together previously on Atlanta, where Skarsgård played himself in an episode of the hit Hulu/FX series. He also led Robert Eggers’ last film before Nosferatu, The Northman, and he joined the MonsterVerse in the 2021 outing, Godzilla vs. Kong. Skarsgård also belongs to one of the most talented families in Hollywood — his father is Stellan Skarsgård, and his brother is Bill Skarsgård.

Despite its final airing over two weeks ago, Severance Season 2 remains atop Apple TV+ streaming charts as fans eagerly await news about Season 3. Following closely behind Severance in the Apple TV+ top 10 is The Studio, the star-studded Hollywood drama led by Seth Rogen and Kathryn Hahn. Ted Lasso has also used the recent news of its Season 4 revival to ride into the #3 spot on Apple TV+, with Brian Tyree Henry and Wagner Moura’s Dope Thief following behind at #4. Ridley Scott directed an episode of Dope Thief. Other notable entries in the Apple TV+ top 10 include Shrinking (Harrison Ford), Silo (Rebecca Ferguson), and Slow Horses (Gary Oldman).

Alexander Skarsgård’s Murderbot premieres on Apple TV+ on May 16. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of the series.
