Move over Yellowstone, there’s a recent gritty Western drama in town. Today, Netflix has dropped the official trailer for its upcoming series, American Primeval, a project that has its eyes set on a fresh examination of how the American West was established. Set in 1857, the series tosses a murky tone over an even darker time when killing a man for a plot of land was a daily occurrence and families were forced to fend for themselves as they struck out into recent territory. Assembling an all-star cast, filmmaker Pete Berg (Friday Night Lights) moves from the massive screen to the diminutive for his latest directorial production, working alongside the likes of Taylor Kitsch (John Carter), Betty Gilpin (GLOW), Shea Whigham (Boardwalk Empire), and more.
In typical Western fashion, the trailer for American Primeval features plenty of open prairies, Conestoga wagons, bonnets, and bullets. Signs of war are evident at every turn as the government faces off against Mormons led by Brigham Young, who are traveling to their hopeful paradise. Meanwhile, tensions are growing within the indigenous population as the colonizers encroach on their land. Not only do travelers need to watch their backs for other humans, but the elements aren’t a thing to be trifled with, as proven by a shot of the Wasatch Mountains piled high with snow. Tossed into the center of it all, whether she likes it or not, is Gilpin’s character who has set out with her youthful son to find her husband amidst all the turmoil. Along the way, her path will cross with Kitsch’s Isaac, who will accompany the pair through the madness with all three hoping to make it to the other end unscathed.
Meet the Cast of ‘American Primeval’
Filling out the rest of the show’s ensemble cast is a lineup that includes Dane DeHaan (Kill Your Darlings), Saura Lightfoot-Leon (Hoard), Joe Tippett (Mare of Easttown), Derek Hinkey (Horizon: An American Saga), Preston Mota (Asteroid City), Jai Courtney (A Good Day to Die Hard), Kim Coates (Sons of Anarchy), and Shawnee Pourier (Stranger Things).
Like the elements that faced those attempting to live in the West in the behind schedule 1800s, the original minds behind American Primeval are also forces to be reckoned with. Along with directing, Berg also serves as an executive producer. Audiences will easily recognize the helmer’s name from past projects that include The Rundown and Patriots Day, as well as TV titles such as Wonderland, Friday Night Lights, and The Leftovers. Meanwhile, the title’s writer, creator, and executive producer, Mark L. Smith has garnered plenty of acclaim during his career in screenwriting, having penned the screenplays for films including The Revenant, The Marsh King’s Daughter, and Twisters.
