After a cluttered and, at times unpredictable awards season, it all came down to this –– the massive show. Hosted by Conan O’Brien, the 97th Academy Awards happened Sunday evening in Los Angeles, and Anora emerged as Best Picture.
With a surprising sweep of several major categories –– also including Best Director, Original Screenplay and Editing for filmmaker Sean Baker (who becomes the first person to win four Oscars in one night) and a somewhat surprising win for star Mikey Madison over Demi Moore –– Anora became the little indie that could.
This was a year that the academy members chose to spread the Oscar love –– The Brutalist‘s Adrien Brody was named Best Actor, while Lol Crawley won Cinematography and Daniel Blumberg’s score saw him take the stage for an emotional, nervous speech.
Wicked, meanwhile, won Costume Design and Production Design, Dune 2 took Sound and Visual Effects, while Emilia Pérez’ Zoe Saldana won her latest Supporting Acting award and the film’s ‘El Mal’ nabbed Best Original Song.
On the acting front, Brody and Saldaña were not exactly surprises, nor was Kieran Culkin, who has so many awards for his Supporting Actor turn in A Real Pain he could open a trophy shop.
More unexpected? Flow running away with Best Animated Feature above the more classic picks of The Wild Robot or Inside Out 2.
As for the show itself, it ran very long –– we’re sure there will be those who question the extended Bond music tribute or even host Conan O’Brien’s own musical number about not wasting time, but for the most part it was a relatively entertaining show, with a few political jabs and some truly heartfelt speeches (such as the filmmakers behind Best Feature Documentary No Other Land).
