Never make a promise you can’t keep — especially if that promise is tied to a loved one’s dying wish. That lesson will come back to haunt Devon Terrell’s (It’s What’s Inside) Henry tenfold in the trailer for Bury Me When I’m Dead, which Collider is excited to exclusively unveil today. Slated for an on-demand arrival on Friday, July 18, the latest film from Vertical has already seen its filmmaker and writer, Seabold Krebs, receive accolades for his unique storytelling direction and homage to iconic genre films that have come before. In addition to the first look at the trailer, audiences can feast their eyes on the lively neon poster that features the primary trio of characters at the center of the twisted story.

There’s plenty of shock value within the first few seconds of the Bury Me When I’m Dead trailer, which opens with a cheerful conversation between two friends, Henry (Terrell) and Rebecca (Makenzie Leigh), while they begin planning their dream ultimate road trip. It’s a charming, endearing, and even unthreatening chat until the unthinkable happens and an ambulance plows into Rebecca (à la Final Destination, The Boys, or even Mean Girls). From that point forward, it’s obvious that no one and nothing will be unthreatening or sacred in the movie, as we watch Henry’s world fully flip upside down. We soon find out that Henry’s wife, Catherine (Charlotte Hope), was suffering from brain cancer and left her spouse with one seemingly plain request — bury her in the remote forest by her childhood home.

Unfortunately, things aren’t that basic, as not only does Catherine’s father threaten Henry with returning his daughter’s body to the city, but it’s unveiled that Rebecca and Henry were having an affair, and the former is now pregnant. As the stress compounds and one harrowing event leads to another, Henry can’t aid but believe the ghost of his ex-wife is punishing him for disregarding her dying wish.

Meet the Cast Behind ‘Bury Me When I’m Dead’

The fronting faces of Bury Me When I’m Dead will look incredibly familiar to audiences, especially those who have been staying up-to-date on streaming horror offerings of the last year. Terrell landed his breakthrough into the industry thanks to his work in the 2016 biographical film, Barry, in which he starred as the younger version of future president Barack Obama. Late last year, the actor dipped into the sci-fi horror universe with his addition to the cast of Netflix’s It’s What’s Inside.

2024 was also a year of horror for Leigh, who starred alongside Lewis Pullman in Gary Dauberman’s feature-length adaptation of Stephen King’s beloved novel, Salem’s Lot. The actress also holds credits in Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk and Gotham. Rounding out the cast is Hope, a Game of Thrones alum who has also appeared in The English Game and Catch Me a Killer.

Check out our exclusive first look at the trailer for Bury Me When I’m Dead above and watch it on demand on July 18.
