There is an argument to be made that Blumhouse is one of the busiest production companies around right now. This year alone, the horror juggernaut has already helped shepherd Wolf Man, Drop, and The Woman In The Yard into cinemas, and it will have added M3GAN 2.0, Black Phone 2, and a Five Nights At Freddy’s sequel to its comprehensive canon before 2025 is through. Now, at the company’s first The Business Of Fear event in Hollywood, Blumhouse has announced it’s teaming up with James Wan’s Atomic Monster and Kinetic Games to bring paranormal survival horror hit Phasmophobia to the massive screen.

Initially released in back in 2020, becoming a global smash hit after gaining momentum from Twitch streamers, Phasmophobia is, fundamentally, a ghost hunting game. In the game, you play as one of a team of up to four paranormal investigators working together to complete a contract to identify what kind of supernatural spook is haunting a given location. A huge part of the thrill of the game is the sheer diversity of haunts you encounter — from Banshees to Jinn, Poltergeists to Yōkai, Demons to Wraiths — and as such, the potential for a cinematic take on the source is near-boundless. Plus, with Warner Bros. set to bring the curtain down on The Conjuring universe with Last Rites later this year, there’s certainly a gap in the market for a novel paranormal franchise to break through.

“We’re thrilled to officially announce that a Phasmophobia film adaption is in development — it’s a big moment for the whole Kinetic team, and the start of something really exciting,” director of Kinetic Games and Phasmophobia lead dev Daniel Knight said in a statement following the movie’s announcement. “We never could’ve imagined the incredible heights this game would reach when it launched five years ago, and we’re so thankful to our amazing community for the lasting impact Phasmophobia has had in the gaming space and beyond. Working with Blumhouse and Atomic Monster marks an incredible new chapter for the game, and we can’t wait to share more as the project develops.”

Roll over Ghostbusters, sayonara Sam and Dean, bye-bye Mulder and Scully, and in a bit Yvette Fielding, it looks like Blumhouse will handle the ghosts from here. We’ll keep the ouija board and spectrometer out for more updates on Phasmophobia just as soon as we get ’em.
