As far as we’re concerned, any Spider-Man news is worth throwing your hands in the air for. But the most recent casting announcement for Destin Daniel Cretton’s upcoming Spidey fourquel Spider-Man: Brand New Day doesn’t just have us throwing our hands up, it has us shouting “Hands!” too. And that’s because, per Deadline‘s reporting, Liza Colón-Zayas — aka The Bear‘s formidable line cook Tina Marrero — has joined the cast for the return of Tom Holland’s beloved warm neighbourhod.
Officially, Marvel Studios has given no comment Colón-Zayas’ casting as of yet, meaning we have no idea who exactly she’ll be playing in Brand New Day, but the Emmy winner joins Sadie Sink as the second newcomer to the MCU confirmed for Shang-Chi director Cretton’s first swing at a Spidey movie. Set to pick things up after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which saw Doctor Strange cast a spell that made the world forget who Peter Parker was, Brand New Day has been written by regular Spider-Man scribes Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna. And though, as you’d expect, plot details on the fourquel are being kept firmly under wraps for now, its title may offer some hints. Brand New Day is also the name of an (in)famed comic books story, one that saw a similarly forgotten Peter Parker starting afresh after a wide-scale memory wipe, estranged from his beloved Mary Jane Watson and tangling with the likes of Harry Osborn and recent baddies Mister Negative, Freak, and Paper Doll.
For now though, beyond confirmation that Tom Holland will once again play Peter Parker/Spider-Man, and that Zendaya and Jacob Batalon are expected to return alongside the newcomers to the cast, Spider-Man: Brand New Day remains a bit of a mystery wrapped in an enigma sandwiched between an Avengers: Doomsday and a Secret Wars. We can look forward to trying to decode said mystery as the movie’s 31 July, 2026 cinema release grows ever closer. (If Colón-Zayas winds up being Rio Morales though, just remember that we called it!)
