After nearly two years of waiting for more of DI Sunny Khan (Sanjeev Bhaskar) and DCI Jessica James (Sinéad Keenan) in the U.S., the detective duo is almost back in business. PBS Masterpiece just released the first trailer for Season 6 of ITV’s beloved British mystery series Unforgotten, which teases their latest chilly case to solve. Fortunately for the seasoned sleuths, they waste no time finding a break that will guide their next steps in the investigation. However, trouble is likely to find them in what appears to be a gruesome crime that still haunts many of the locals. The acclaimed drama will pick up with the modern investigation on August 24.
Sticking to the series’s formula of exploring a chilly case through the friends, family, and other people connected to the victim, Season 6 sees Jess, Sunny, and their team seeking the truth behind a dismembered dead body recovered in Whitney Marsh. It’s one of the pair’s darkest cases yet, with a key piece of evidence being a rotting rib cage found in the waters. For the nearby residents, the discovery is nauseating as they ponder how someone could commit such a heinous act. The detectives are also surprised by how recent the murder was, with the body only showing signs of being dead for about 13 years. Yet, in only their second season together, the proficient partnership between the pair continues to grow, as Jess remarks, “Oh, we’re good” when they find a match for the body and a potential cause of death that could lead back to the culprit.
Keenan’s James will continue to establish herself as a worthwhile partner to Bhaskar’s Sunny in Unforgotten Season 6 after Nicola Walker tragically departed as DCI Cassie Stewart after Season 4. The current detective duo will be joined by Jordan Long as DS Murray Boulting, Carolina Main as DC Fran Lingley, Georgia Mackenzie as Dr. Leanne Balcombe, Pippa Nixon as DC Kaz Willets, and Michelle Bonnard as Sal. In terms of newcomers to the ever-rotating cast, MyAnna Buring was brought on board as right-wing reporter Melinda Ricci, with Peaky Blinders star Emmett Scanlan joining as her fiancé, Patrick, alongside Maximilian Fairley, Elham Ehsas, Victoria Hamilton, Damian Molony, and Castlevania Nocturne star Pixie Davies.
‘Unforgotten’ Continues to Stand Out Among Other Crime Dramas
Since its premiere in 2015, Unforgetton has received boundless praise from critics and audiences for taking a human-centric approach to mysteries. Created by Chris Lang and directed by Andy Wilson, the series owns a stellar 91% score overall on Rotten Tomatoes and has one both a BAFTA and a Broadcasting Press Guild Award in the U.K. For Masterpiece, it’s also one of their most popular programs that’s not based on a novel. The widespread love for the show led to a Season 7 renewal almost immediately after Season 6 drew to a close on ITV, meaning the duo of Sunny and Jesse isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
