The Cairo International Film Festival #CIFF45 concluded its monumental 45th edition on Friday, November 22, 2024, with an electrifying closing ceremony held at the prestigious Cairo Opera House. Over its remarkable journey of 10 days, the festival brought together luminaries from the global film industry, audiences, and critics, showcasing the transformative power of cinema.

A Record-Breaking Edition: Diversity and Milestones

This year’s CIFF, led by the iconic actor Hussein Fahmy, set a new benchmark in the festival’s history. With 194 films from 72 countries, it highlighted the festival’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity. The lineup included:

  • 8 International Premieres
  • 119 Regional Premieres for the Middle East and Africa

  • Bronze Pyramid for Debut/Second Feature: Pedro Freire (Malo, Brazil)

Screenwriting and Artistic Excellence

  • Naguib Mahfouz Award for Best Screenplay: Alessandro Cassigoli and Casey Kaufman (Vittoria, Italy)
  • Henri Barakat Award for Artistic Contribution: Najmi Sanjak (Aisha, Turkey)

Acting Honors

  • Best Actor: Lee Kang Sheng (Blue Sun Palace, USA) and Maxim Stoyanov (Postage Stamps, Russia)
  • Best Actress: Alina Khoyfanova (Postage Stamps, Russia) and Yara De Novais (Malo, Brazil)

 

Celebrating Arab and African Voices

CIFF’s Horizons of Arab Cinema and African Film Competition sections celebrated the region’s rich cinematic heritage:

  • Best Arab Film: State of Love by Carol Mansour and Mona Khaldi
  • Best Director (Arab Cinema): Noha Adel (Spring Came Laughing)
  • Best African Film: Dahomey by Mati Diop

Three Palestinian films garnered significant recognition:

  • Dreams of a Square Kilometer won the top Palestinian film award.
  • State of Love claimed second place, and Fleeting Dreams by Rashid Masharawi secured third.

Short Films and Documentaries
