The 45th edition of the Cairo International Film Festival #CIFF24 commenced with great fanfare, inaugurating the Cairo Industry Days (CID), which runs from November 15 to 20. Presided over by the celebrated actor and CIFF President Hussein Fahmy, the event’s opening ceremony was also attended by Festival Director Essam Zakaria and CID Director Mohamed Sayed Abdel Rahim.
A Hub for Global Industry Engagement
Hussein Fahmy toured the CIFF Film Market, a critical gathering point that facilitates connections between filmmakers, production companies, and investors from across the Arab world and internationally. This year’s market showcases several leading Egyptian production companies and key cinematic organizations, including the Egyptian Film Authority, which has played a vital role in supporting and funding local cinematic projects to strengthen the industry.
The CIFF Film Market serves as a catalyst for networking, providing a platform for creative collaborations and strategic partnerships. Through the market, participants have the opportunity to explore potential co-productions, funding avenues, and distribution channels that can extend the reach of regional films to a broader global audience.
Hussein Fahmy’s Vision for Egyptian Cinema
Following the inauguration, Fahmy expressed his optimism about the current state of Egyptian cinema, stating, “The industry is flourishing, and our heritage in film remains strong. We have great movies, studios, and talented filmmakers. Embracing modern technology is essential for further advancement and keeping Egyptian cinema competitive on the global stage.”
Debut of the Dolby Exhibition: Enhancing the Viewing Experience
Marking a first for the festival, Fahmy unveiled the Dolby Exhibition, which provides visitors with a unique, interactive experience to discover the latest in cinema audio and visual technology. This collaboration with Dolby, the global leader in audio and imaging innovations, aims to redefine the cinematic experience and attract industry professionals interested in integrating these advancements into their work.
Fahmy reflected on his efforts to strengthen the festival during a previous term as President: “In one of my earlier leadership roles, I spent three days promoting the ‘Cairo Market’ and managed to secure an impressive range of cinema equipment that saw overwhelming interest and sold out quickly. Today, I am thrilled to see these strategic initiatives return, supporting the growth of the industry.”
Workshops and Knowledge Exchange
Cairo Industry Days has established itself as a vital platform that not only promotes the business side of film but also fosters knowledge exchange through workshops, panels, and interactive discussions. These sessions address real challenges facing the film industry, from funding and distribution to navigating technological advancements. Topics such as digital transformation in film, sustainable production practices, and the impact of streaming services on traditional cinema distribution will be discussed by seasoned industry experts.
The sessions include participation from prominent directors, producers, screenwriters, and technical experts who share insights and innovative solutions. This year, the CID aims to bridge the gap between emerging filmmakers and established industry veterans, providing them with the tools and understanding to thrive in an ever-evolving cinematic landscape.
Strengthening Egypt’s Role as a Cinematic Hub
The inclusion of international participants further solidifies the festival’s role in positioning Egypt as a hub for regional and global film production. By bringing together diverse voices and expertise, the CIFF and CID reaffirm the importance of collaboration and cross-cultural storytelling that resonates beyond borders.
The CIFF Legacy
The Cairo International Film Festival is recognized as one of the oldest and most influential film festivals in the Arab world and Africa. It holds a unique place as the only festival in the region accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF) in Brussels. This endorsement underscores the festival’s commitment to maintaining high standards and providing a platform for the best in cinema from the region and the world.
