When it comes to starring in literary adaptations, Carey Mulligan has plenty of form. To date, the three-time Oscar nominee has appeared in adaptations of Pride & Prejudice, Never Let Me Go, The Great Gatsby, and Far From The Madding Crowd to name but a few. And now, per THR‘s reporting, it looks like Mulligan is getting ready to facilitate bring another beloved classic to life as the star is currently in negotiations to play a key part in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming, Netflix bound Narnia movie.
According to THR, Mulligan is circling the role of Mabel Kirke in Gerwig’s self-written and directed movie, set to adapt the sixth book of C. S. Lewis’ Chronicles Of Narnia, The Magician’s Nephew. Chronologically the first novel in the Narnia cycle (directly preceding The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe), The Magician’s Nephew follows Digory and Polly, two children who unwittingly unleash the villainous White Witch into 20th century London after getting caught up in the magic meddling of Digory’s uncle Andrew. If THR‘s reporting is correct, then Mulligan would be playing Digory’s invalided mother — and Andrew’s sister — Mabel, joining an increasingly stacked cast also including Daniel Craig as Andrew, Emma Mackey as the White Witch, and Meryl Streep as great lion and Primordial Creator Aslan. The actors playing Digory and Polly however remain as yet undetermined, with the movie’s producers still deep in the casting process for now.
For now, all of the castings on Gerwig’s Barbie follow-up remain officially unconfirmed, but with the actor-turned-filmmaker’s Narnia due to hit cinemas in IMAX next Thanksgiving ahead of a Christmas Day drop on Netflix, we’re fully expecting some more concrete information on this one to start heading our way soon. Netflix’s massive TUDUM event is coming up at the end of this month, so perhaps we’ll get our first spate of casting confirmations there… watch this space!
