It would be fair to say it’s been a mad ancient year for Channing Tatum. In the past twelve months, the Magic Mike star has helped launch Apollo 11 (Fly Me To The Moon), gotten his rocks off as a cancelled tech billionaire with a obscure secret (Blink Twice), finally shuffled the deck of Marvel’s Ragin’ Cajun Gambit (Deadpool & Wolverine), and brought some Hollywood magic to Wrexham AFC. If the first trailer for Derek Cianfrance’s true story inspired Roofman is anything to go by though, it looks like things are about to get even more cray-cray for Tatum as he takes on the role of Jeffrey Manchester, a kindly ex military man who *checks notes* robbed a bunch of McDonald’s’, got sent to jail, escaped jail, and then *double checks notes* hid out in a Toys R Us for months on end while holding down a relationship and nabbing toys for his up-to-date girlfriend’s kid. Sound wild? Well, it looks even wilder. Check out the trailer for yourself below;

Well, well, well… where to begin? As you can probably tell from this first look at Roofman, Jeffrey Manchester — notorious a felon as he may have been with his drill-the-roof, nab-the-cash routine — isn’t exactly El Chapo. In fact, several of the tidbits in this trailer — like the bit where Tatum’s exceedingly cordial robber gives a store worker his jacket before stuffing them in walk-in freezers — corroborate real life accounts of Manchester’s manner. But while we can clearly expect lashings of oddball comedy from Cianfrance’s latest (the timing of the ink-bomb going off in Peter Dinklage’s face is exquisite), and a substantial ol’ dollop of strange romance between Tatum’s Manchester and Kirsten Dunst’s Leigh Wainscott, the real hook here is how this actually looks to be a surprisingly tender examination of a man with a good heart who’s made some really bad choices — and stolen a lot of money/toys/M&Ms.

Here’s the official synopsis for the movie, which co-stars Ben Mendelsohn, LaKeith Stanfield, and Juno Temple: “Based on an unbelievable true story, Roofman follows Jeffrey Manchester (Channing Tatum), a former Army Ranger and struggling father who turns to robbing McDonald’s restaurants by cutting holes in their roofs, earning him the nickname: Roofman. After escaping prison, he secretly lives inside a Toys “R” Us for six months, surviving undetected while planning his next move. But when he falls for Leigh (Kirsten Dunst), a divorced mom drawn to his undeniable charm, his double life begins to unravel, setting off a compelling and suspenseful game of cat and mouse as his past closes in.”

We can look forward to finding out if Roofman will steal our hearts — or just our time — when the movie hits UK cinemas later this year.
