It would be fair to say that there have been some legendary clashes in the history of cinema… Luke Skywalker vs Darth Vader, Bruce Lee vs Chuck Norris, Neo vs Morpheus, *ahem* Alien Vs Predator to name but a few. And it looks like The Old Guard 2 is about to give us another scrap for the ages: Charlize Theron vs Uma Thurman. In the first trailer for Victoria Mahoney’s Netflix action sequel, which is set to once again take viewers into a world of immortal mercenaries doing battle across the centuries, we see Theron’s millennia-old warrior Andy and her motley crew of old fighters (Luca Marinelli, Marwan Kenzari, KiKi Layne, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and franchise newcomer Henry Golding) come face to face with Thurman’s mysterious huge bad, named as “the first of the immortals”. Sound badass? Well, it looks it too — check out the teaser below;
Now, it would be fair to say that 2020’s The Old Guard wasn’t director Gina Prince-Bythewood’s greatest work yet (note: The Woman King is, however, a must-see banger), and writer Greg Rucka’s adaptation of his and Leandro Fernández graphic novel series wasn’t perhaps quite the spiritual Highlander successor we had hoped for. Nevertheless, with a fresh director’s eyes on the material, Thurman front and centre giving it The Bride and then some, and the setpieces teased here looking pretty fricking slick (Furiosa vs The Bride sword fight, anyone?), consider our curiosity piqued and our attention caught.
The official synopsis for the movie, should the whole sword fighting Thurman/Theron not be enough to sell you on this one, reads thus: “Andy (Charlize Theron) and her team of immortal warriors are back, with a renewed sense of purpose in their mission to protect the world. With Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts) still in exile after his betrayal, and Quynh (Veronica Ngô) out for revenge after escaping her underwater prison, Andy grapples with her newfound mortality as a mysterious threat emerges that could jeopardize everything she’s worked towards for thousands of years. Andy, Nile (KiKi Layne), Joe (Marwan Kenzari), Nicky (Luca Marinelli) and James Copley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) enlist the help of Tuah (Henry Golding), an old friend who may provide the key to unlocking the mystery behind immortal existence.”
Will Booker be redeemed? We don’t know. Will Quynh get her revenge? Possibly. Are we 100% going to be seated and ready for this purely based on the tantalising prospect of an undead Uma Thurman and newly mortal Charlize Theron head-to-head? Abso-fudging-lutely. Get ready for a throwdown centuries in the making when The Old Guard 2 hits Netflix on 2 July. *Sounds Kill Bill alarms*
