Since pivoting from making video essays to feature films with 2017’s John Cho starring mumblecore movie Columbus, Korean-American filmmaker Kogonada has taken audiences on several large bold lovely journeys, from the lilting lo-sci-fi of After Yang to the generation-spanning drama of Apple TV+ series Pachinko, to the space operatics of a galaxy far, far away as one of The Acolyte‘s directorial collective. Now, Kogonada is about to take audiences on A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, dipping his toes into romantic fantasy alongside After Yang lead Colin Farrell and Barbie star Margot Robbie with what looks to be the director’s most ambitious movie yet. Check out the trailer below;
Well this just looks bloody lovely, doesn’t it? About Time-y lo-sci-fi vibes, Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie vibing after Farrell’s sentient sat-nav takes to playing matchmaker, and some timey-wimey (ever so slightly that one Paul Giamatti Black Mirror episode-y) shenanigans involving doorways to our protagonists’ pasts — what more could you ask for? Oh, you quite fancy Studio Ghibli legend Joe Hisaishi chipping in his first score outside of Japan and Korea? Well there’s that, too. And as-yet-unexplained appearances from Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Kevin Kline, and Jodie Turner-Smith. That’s plenty large, bold, and lovely in our books!
The official synopsis for the movie, written by Seth Reiss (The Menu), reads as follows: “What if you could open a doorway and walk through it to re-live a defining moment from your past? Sarah (Margot Robbie) and David (Colin Farrell) are single strangers who meet at a mutual friend’s wedding and soon, through a surprising twist of fate, find themselves on A Big Bold Beautiful Journey – a funny, fantastical, sweeping adventure together where they get to re-live important moments from their respective pasts, illuminating how they got to where they are in the present…and possibly getting a chance to alter their futures.”
Get in folks — we’re off on A Big Bold Beautiful Journey with Margot and Colin when Kogonada’s latest comes to UK cinemas on 19 September.
