Casinos have often been great fare for cinema. I mean, just look at Casino, in which Martin Scorsese (once again) went god-mode. Or, Ocean’s Eleven, still one of the coolest movies ever made. Even Zack Snyder found fun in Sin City when he dropped several zombies in Vegas for Army Of The Dead. Now, it’s the turn of filmmaker Edward Berger to capture the dazzling lights, dizzying highs, crushing losses, and hedonistic buzz of big-money games in Ballad Of A Small Player – another speedy return from the director in the wake of his Oscar-bothering Conclave and All Quiet On The Western Front. Watch the colourful, crazy trailer here:
It looks like Berger is going even more stylish with this one than his previous works – throwing Colin Farrell’s Lord Doyle into the overstimulating world of Macau’s casinos, boozing it up and throwing all his chips in on tables left, right and centre. Fun as that seems, it looks mightily stressful too – Doyle certain seems to be acting rashly. As well as Farrell, we get glimpses here of Fala Chen and Tilda Swinton, each hoping to find Doyle as his past catches up with him.
Here’s the official synopsis: “Lord Doyle (Colin Farrell) is laying low in Macau – spending his days and nights on the casino floors, drinking heavily and gambling what little money he has left. Struggling to keep up with his fast-rising debts, he is offered a lifeline by the mysterious Dao Ming (Fala Chen), a casino employee with secrets of her own. However, in hot pursuit is Cynthia Blithe (Tilda Swinton) – a private investigator ready to confront Doyle with what he is running from. As Doyle tries to climb to salvation, the confines of reality start to close in.”
It looks like another promising effort from Berger, quickly emerging as a major cinematic player – and thankfully, this one is getting a cinematic release, coming to select cinemas from 15 October, before streaming on Netflix two weeks later on 19 October. All-in!
