EXCLUSIVE: Coproduction Office has closed a first wave of international sales on The Fin, the second feature by South Korean director Syeyoung Park, ahead of its world premiere this week in the Cinema of the Present competition at the Locarno Film Festival.

The film is set in a near-future, post-war and ecologically devastated Korea, where mutated outcasts called Omegas are captured and exploited as low-cost labor. Mia, an Omega in hiding, works in a shadowy, eerie fishing store that preys on people’s nostalgia for the sea and fishing. When Sujin, a newly recruited government worker, takes notice of Mia’s suspicious behaviour, she delves deeper into this underground world, beginning to question her once unshakable faith in the state’s ideology.

The film blends dystopian sci-fi with psychological and political undercurrents, questioning the mechanisms of fear, surveillance, and state ideology.

Early sales have been concluded with Alamode Film (Germany & Austria), Feelgood Entertainment (Greece), Aerofilms (Eastern Europe excluding Poland), Gutek Film (Poland), Filmstop (Baltics), Edko Films (Hong Kong), September Film in collaboration with Anticipate (Singapore) and Falcon Films (MENA).

The film is produced by Heejung Oh for Seesaw Pictures, Philippe Bober for Essential Filmproduktion, and Park for Pretty Things Films, with backing from the Doha Film Institute.

Park’s debut feature The Fifth Thoracic Vertebra premiered at Bucheon and went on to screen at Berlin Critics’ Week and Sitges.

Park said: “I set out to make a film that explores the contagiousness of fear and the makings of myths. The film is set in a near-future Korea, but hopefully, it carries a theme and deals with topics universal to all of us, especially now. I am delighted that these early sales mean that will be seen by audiences around the world”

Further sales are currently in negotiation.
