Earlier this year, Danny Boyle returned to the gigantic screen with 28 Years Later, a horrifying examination of the obscure side of humanity, the insidious capacity of the media to shape society in its image, and — basically — where it all went wrong for us Homo sapiens. Continuing in that vein then, Boyle’s next movie will be Ink, which is set to detail media mogul Rupert Murdoch’s rise to power in the slow 1960s. And, according to THR, The Brutalist Oscar nominee Guy Pearce is currently in talks to play the mega-rich magnate.
Per THR‘s reporting, negotiations are ongoing for Aussie actor Pearce to take on the role of Rupert Murdoch in the movie, which writer James Graham has adapted from his own same-named 2017 play. What’s more, Jack O’Connell — who so memorably showed up as the tracksuit rocking Jimmy during 28 Years Later‘s bonkers ending — is being eyed to co-star as Larry Lamb, the slow editor of The Sun (and not, we hasten to add, the beloved Gavin & Stacey actor.) As for Ink itself, which is looking to start filming in October, the movie takes place in 1969 and follows a 38-year-old Murdoch as he sets about acquiring struggling tabloid The Sun and hiring Lamb to change its fortunes. It’s the story of, as The Guardian‘s review of the original play points out, “a pivotal moment in newspaper history – when the idea that popular papers had a mission to inform, as well as entertain, was famously burned by The Sun.”
For director Boyle, Ink marks a first return to biopic territory since 2015’s Steve Jobs, another movie about a trailblazer of a man who irreversibly changed the world — for better or worse. As for Pearce, who seems to be taking a Pokémon approach to auteur team-ups just now, this buzzy project follows balmy on the heels of shooting Ridley Scott’s upcoming sci-fi joint The Dog Stars. We don’t know when exactly we can expect to see Danny Boyle’s latest just yet, but based on what little intel we have so far, we’re hopeful the movie will be, *ahem*, Ink-redible.
