EXCLUSIVE: Dark Sky Films has acquired US rights to Camp ahead of Sunday’s (September 21) world premiere at Fantastic Fest (September 18-26) in Austin, Texas.

Avalon Fast wrote and directed the Canadian feature about Emily, a guilt-ridden youthful woman haunted by a traumatic past, who finds solace as a camp counsellor while navigating grief, witchcraft, and the power of female friendship.

When her father suggests she takes a position at a summer camp for troubled youth, Emily is embraced by the other counsellors. As she begins to believe in a fresh life, she hears a voice from deep within the woods that urges her to go home and may be impossible to ignore.

The self-styled “girl horror” will receive its international premiere at Sitges in Spain next month and stars Zola Grimmer, Alice Wordsworth, Cherry Moore, Lea Rose Sebastianis, Ella Reece, Austyn Van de Kamp, Sophie Bawks-Smith, Izza Jarvis, and Aiden Laudersmith.

Producers are Taylor Nodrick, Jacob Glickman, Jackie De Niverville, Martin Cadieux-Rouillard, and Maya Cadieux-Rouillard. Camp was made with the support of Telefilm Canada and Quebec and Canadian tax credits.

The feature will screen as the centerpiece film at Brooklyn Horror Film Festival and gets its Australian premiere at SXSW Sydney. Vancouver Island-born Fast’s first feature, Honeycomb, premiered at Slamdance in 2022 and played at Fantasia.

Dark Sky Films negotiated the deal with executive producers Peter Kuplowsky and Michael Peterson and producer Nodrick on behalf of the filmmakers. Dark Sky Films EVP Greg Newman said, “Avalon Fast is one of the most exciting young voices in the horror genre” and hailed her “bold vision and fearless approach to storytelling”.

Kuplowsky added, “Upon seeing her early shorts and first feature Honeycomb, I was struck by Avalon’s confident style and eerie aesthetics, and immediately sought to support Camp, which evocatively expands on her signature dreamlike interplay of creeping dread and coming-of-age anxieties.”

Fast said, “Camp is a hard story and one that is very close to me. It took time to find the right people to support me and this vision. From our first introduction Dark Sky Films were immediately invested and motivated to make this film happen.”
