For a man who may or may not have at one point recently said retirement was on the cards, Denzel Washington is showing no signs of hanging up his acting boots just yet. Not only is the two-time Oscar winner on board for The Equalizer 4 and 5, and not only has he got Spike Lee Apple TV+ joint Highest 2 Lowest due out this summer, but he’s just signed on for another eyebrow raising project, too. Per Deadline‘s reporting, the Training Day veteran is set to star alongside Robert Pattinson and Daisy Edgar-Jones in Here Comes The Flood, a recent, Netflix bound heist movie from The Two Popes director Fernando Meirelles.

Announced at Netflix’s Upfront presentation earlier today, Here Comes The Flood — boasting a screenplay by soon-to-be Star Wars trilogy writer Simon Kinberg — is shrouded in a degree of secrecy at this stage. So far, we know that Meirelles’ movie is being described as ‘an unconventional heist movie about a bank guard, a teller, and a master thief in a deadly game of cons and double crosses’, though who of the film’s leading trio will be playing who is uncertain. On the back burner at Netflix since the streamer paid a seven-figure sum for the script back in 2020, at one point Jason Bateman was attached to direct the non-linear flick, but now the project is being resurrected and then some with City Of God director Meirelles at the helm and a trio of capital ‘A’ A-listers front and centre.

To date, Netflix has had patchy luck with star-studded genre fare, with the likes of The Gray Man, Red Notice, and Heart Of Stone all falling flat in recent years. Still, Jaume Collet-Serra’s festive offering Carry-On just last Christmas showed us that with the right filmmaker, the right stars, and the right concept, the streamer can satisfyingly bring blockbuster thrills from the multiplex to the sofaplex. And quite frankly, with Meirelles at the helm and Washington, Pattinson, and Edgar-Jones leading, you’ve got to imagine there’s something in this one worth getting hyped for. Here Comes The Flood… bring it on!
