Deserted Island Horror Thriller ‘Monster Island’ with the Orang Ikan

“This thing comes back – we need to be ready for it!” Shudder has revealed an official trailer for Monster Island, an indie horror thriller made by Singaporean filmmaker Mike Wiluan. It’s a creature feature from the other side of the world, about a ferocious mythological creature, called the Orang Ikan. Which is sort of similar to the Creature for the Black Lagoon, a violent fish-like creature who inhabits this island. Will they defeat it? After being torpedoed by allied submarines, a Japanese soldier and a British POW are stranded on a deserted island and soon discover that they’re being hunted by a ferocious mythological creature, known as the Orang Ikan. Set in the Pacific, 1942. Two mortal enemies must come together to survive the unknown. The survival horror film, which is supported by the Singapore Film Commission (SFC), was shot at Infinite Studios in Batam, Indonesia – one of the largest production service facilities out in Southeast Asia. The film stars Dean Fujioka, Callum Woodhouse and, Alexandra Gottardo. After first premiering at festivals last year it’ll be streaming on Shudder starting in July this summer movie season. Beware the fish monster.

May, 1942. WWII rages across a world divided. Sailing across the sea, a Japanese Hell Ship transports POWs to occupied territories for slave labour. Onboard the ship is Saito, a traitor to the Japanese who is being sent back to the motherland. Saito is shackled to another POV, a British soldier named Bronson who holds nothing but hatred for Saito because of his Japanese nationality. When the Hell Ship is torpedoed by Allied submarines, Saito and Bronson are thrown overboard and wash ashore a deserted island. But they are not alone. Bronson and Saito are hunted by a monstrous creature – the Orang Ikan – who will stop at nothing until both men are dead. Bronson and Saito must put aside their hatred for one another to survive the island and kill the creature before it kills them first. Monster Island, originally known as Orang Ikan, is written and directed by Singaporean genre producer / writer / filmmaker Mike Wiluan, director of the film Motel Melati previously, and the series “Operandi Gerhana” plus a few shorts & other series. Produced by Anthony Khoo, Eric Khoo, James Khoo, Fumie Suzuki Lancaster, Ninin Musa, Fong Cheng Tan, Darryl Yeo, Freddie Yeo. This initially premiered at the 2024 Tokyo Film Festival last year. Shudder debut Wiluan’s Monster Island film streaming on Shudder starting July 25th, 2025 this summer. Anyone want to watch?
