With 2022 sci-fi action joint Prey, director Dan Trachtenberg launched the iconic Predator franchise into the future by doing something the series had never done before — looking to the past. By sending the galaxy’s most fearsome hunter species to war with a Comanche fighter (Amber Midthunder) in America circa 1719, Trachtenberg swung open the door for the franchise to go anytime, anyplace next. Just imagine: Predator vs Samurai, Predator vs Vikings, Predator vs WWII fighter pilots! Sound chilly? Well that’s just as well, because we’ll be getting all three in Predator: Killer Of Killers, a previously secretive up-to-date animated anthology movie set in the Predatorverse, helmed by Trachtenberg himself and heading straight for Disney+ this summer. Blood-daubed viking warriors? Check. Spitfire dogfights with Yautjan spacecraft? Check. Samurai bisections that are strictly R-rated? Triple check. Yeah, you don’t have to look far to see ol’ Predator’s bloody fingerprints all over Killer Of Killers, whose first trailer sees pre-vis wizards-turned-animation moviemakers The Third Floor take visual cues from recent 2D/3D hybridised offerings such as Blue Eye Samurai and Arcane to create some truly eye-popping adult animated action, all spread across three distinct, fascinating eras. And don’t even get us started on the three Yautjan warriors we see here, each as beastly as the last and each offering compelling up-to-date wrinkles on the iconic, distended-jawed original design: if you were worried that an animated Predator may pack less of a terrifying punch, then worry no more…
Here’s the official synopsis for the movie: “The anthology story follows three of the fiercest warriors in human history: a Viking raider guiding her young son on a bloody quest for revenge; a ninja in feudal Japan who turns against his Samurai brother in a brutal battle for succession; and a WWII pilot who takes to the sky to investigate an otherworldly threat to the Allied cause. But while all these warriors are killers in their own right, they are merely prey for their new opponent — the ultimate killer of killers.” And look below for the up-to-date poster released Disney released alongside it.
With Predator: Badlands due out this November, promising to give us a Predator movie where the hunter is the hero, and Prey 2 still in the works as well, it’s a good time to be a Predhead (as approximately nobody has been calling the franchise’s fans.) And we don’t have ages to wait for Predator: Killer Of Killers, which has a 6 June Disney+ release date locked in its sights. Bring. It. On!
