At this point in his career, there is very little that Tom Cruise hasn’t done. The Mission: Impossible action man has flown Boeing fighter jets, scaled the tallest building in the world, held his breath underwater for six whole minutes, rode a motorcycle off a cliff, and somehow convinced us that his 5’7″ frame could still pass for man mountain Jack Reacher. But one thing the Hollywood icon has yet to do is dabble in the realms of horror (no, Interview With The Vampire doesn’t count!). According to Deadline however, that’s all set to change as Cruise looks set to team up with his American Made and _Edge Of Tomorrow_director Doug Liman on Deeper, a scary recent supernatural thriller.
In a report sourced from Roger Friedman’s Showbiz411 and corroborated by Deadline, the trade confirmed that Liman and Cruise are setting up shop at Warner Bros. to make their third (possibly fourth — there’s still a SpaceX movie for the duo on their horizon) movie together. Friedman’s own source for this stimulating news is Liman himself who, at a recent New York screening of documentary Gaucho Gaucho, explained to the entertainment journalist that he’s interested in making a “scary movie”, noting how he had “never done one […] and neither has Tom [Cruise].” As for what said scary movie entails, all we really know so far is that the film centres around an astronaut who encounters “a terrifying force” while on a deep dive into an unexplored trench.
Cruise and Liman are the latest duo who’ve tried to get Deeper moving, with Bradley Cooper and Kornél Mundruczó — as well as Idris Elba and Baltasar Kormákur — having previously been attached to the project, which has been floating around Hollywood since 2016 now. But with Cruise seemingly gearing up for his last Mission: Impossible rodeo with The Final Reckoning, and Liman coming in fresh off the one-two punch of this year’s The Instigators and Road House, it looks like the movie may have found the dream pairing to finally bring it to our screens. If we see Tom Cruise in a spacesuit or wearing flippers and a snorkel anytime soon, then let’s just say we’ll have a pretty good idea what cinema’s maddest lad is up to next. Yes, Edge Of Tomorrow 2: Live, Die, Repeat And Repeat — obvs!
