Reality Is Not Enough, a documentary about Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh, is set to world premiere as the closing night film of the Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF, August 14-20).

Directed by Paul Sng, the feature finds Welsh at a crossroads, having found significant success with several film adaptations of his books, which have sold 6 million copies worldwide. With his hedonistic days drawing to a close, the outspoken author takes a journey that “explores the boundaries of consciousness through a hallucinogenic trip”.

The documentary combines intimate observational footage, infrequent archive film clips and readings from his novels by actors Liam Neeson, Maxine Peake, Ruth Negga and Stephen Graham as well as musician Nick Cave.

Edinburgh-based filmmaker Sng is known for documentaries Poly Styrene: I Am A Cliché, which won two BIFAs in 2021, and Tish, which premiered at Sheffield DocFest in 2023.

It is co-financed and produced by Edinburgh-based production company LS Films, with the support of Screen Scotland. LS Films managing director Sarah Drummond is executive producer.

A UK release will be handled by Kaleidoscope.

The 78th edition of EIFF is set to open with Eva Victor’s comedy drama Sorry, Baby and the full programme will be announced on July 2.
