The hunt is back on in a brand-new trailer for Predator: Badlands. The latest installment of the beloved sci-fi franchise to come from helmer Dan Trachtenberg is set to unleash itself into cinemas later this year, and, with today’s modern teaser, we’re getting a better idea of exactly how the intriguing storyline will play out. Starring Elle Fanning (A Complete Unknown) and Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi (The Panthers), the film looks to be yet another winner from the director who previously blew viewers away with 2022’s Prey and the recently released Hulu animated feature-length project, Predator: Killer of Killers.
It’s not often that we watch the universe’s greatest and most skilled hunter flounder, but the trailer for Predator: Badlands depicts the Predator in a scenario that we’ve never fully witnessed before — as the prey. While previous installments have seen the galactic traveler taken down by the creature he’s hunting, the teaser reveals that from the gate, this Predator’s first hunt will be an increasingly arduous one with modern enemies around every corner. Luckily, the youthful Predator known as Dek finds his path crossed with Fanning’s Weyland Yutani synth, Thia, who, with her street smarts, deadly fighting skills, and well-timed humor, will assist the struggling Predator — that is if he’ll listen.
What We Learned from the New ‘Predator: Badlands’ Trailer
The modern look revealed a ton of fresh information, like the fact that Fanning’s synth is missing her legs, which makes her ability to assist the Predator fight his way out of arduous situations in a snap even more impressive. We also get an earful of Dek speaking in a different language aside from the clicks that we’ve grown so accustomed to over the six-film series. And yet, there are still other things we’re waiting for, like the reveal of the second character that Fanning will be playing and more info about whether this will turn into a modern installment of Alien vs. Predator — an idea previously teased by Alien: Romulus’ Fede Álvarez.
Although the debut trailer had a lot of us thinking that Predator: Badlands could give us the elderly bait and switch and become an Alien vs. Predator movie, the modern trailer seems to point in a different direction. The apex beast that Dek and Thia are tracking certainly doesn’t look like a Xenomorph, but, to be fair, that doesn’t mean that Trachtenberg is putting all the cards on the table from the jump. Still, the reveal that at least one of Fanning’s characters is connected to Weyland Yutani puts Predator back in the Alien universe and certainly teases what could become the ultimate showdown in the future.
