Lebanese Artist Basma Opens Up About her Struggles with Suicide and Art
Renowned Lebanese artist Basma talked about a difficult period she went through, during which she thought about committing suicide. In an interview on the program “What’s the Story” presented by Rabia Al Zayyat, Basma recalled memories from her artistic beginnings and her refusal to make any concessions.
A Difficult Beginning
Basma started her singing career, performing in English and French, but didn’t sing in Arabic until she joined “Studio El Fan”. After achieving fame, the director Simon Asmar asked her to sign a contract, but she refused due to her distaste for someone controlling her creative decisions.
A Concession-Laden Career
Basma emphasized that art requires concessions, saying: “I put it in my head that I will go the right way and refuse to compromise. I will not lose myself. I am asked to make concessions. All art is concessions. I am telling the truth. Art is a trap. We are tempted. If I accept, I have an album. If I refuse, I stay at home.” She also shared that she was often pressured to make sexual concessions or take money to maintain relationships, which conflicted with her values.
A Period of Struggle and Faith
Despite her success, Basma went through a challenging time when she was exposed to extreme pressure. Her husband was her business manager, and her refusal to compromise led to a financial predicament. During this period, Basma thought about committing suicide, even going so far as to consider driving her car into traffic or throwing herself out of the house. She realized, however, that she didn’t want her children to witness her distress and thought about her mother’s passing, which ultimately led her to draw closer to God.
A New Beginning
Lebanese artist Basma announced her retirement from art in 2020, saying: “I announce my retirement from art, my beloved, to serve the Lord with all my mind, soul, and spirit, and according to His will, Amen.”
