Brat winter will have to wait: Greta Gerwig has found the White Witch to lead her upcoming Netflix Narnia movie and it’s not who we all thought. As you may recall, back in March we shared news that ‘Guess’ singer and pop megastar Charli XCX was circling the White Witch role in Gerwig’s blockbuster up-to-date C.S. Lewis adaptation, though trade sources were quick to add that a specific role hadn’t been 100% settled on at the time. Just as well they did, because THR are now reporting that Emma Mackey, star of Sex Education and Gerwig’s last movie, Barbie, is officially set to play evil sorceress Jadis in the film.
According to THR, Mackey was in the final two for consideration to play the villainous role, with The Substance star Margaret Qualley also vying for the part Tilda Swinton famously took on in 2005 fantasy epic The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe. If reports elsewhere are to be believed, then Mackey will be joining Meryl Streep in the movie. The three-time Oscar winner is apparently in the frame to voice Primordial Creator, King Of Beasts, and ruddy massive lion Aslan in Gerwig’s take on Lewis’ books, with this first of the Lady Bird filmmaker’s two planned features expected to adapt The Magician’s Nephew — the sixth-published but chronologically first tale in The Chronicles Of Narnia.
Officially, Netflix has declined to comment on Mackey’s casting as Jadis, but it wouldn’t be unfair to observe that they’ve also not moved to debunk or deny the Hollywood trades’ reporting, either. Either way, with Gerwig’s self-penned and directed first foray through the wardrobe and into Narnia on course for a Thanksgiving IMAX release next year ahead of a Christmas Day 2026 streaming premiere, we fully expect we’ll be hearing plenty more about Greta Gerwig’s Chronicles of Narnia in the weeks and months ahead. Winter is coming! Hang on, wrong fantasy franchise…
