Emma Stone May Be An Alien In Yorgos Lanthimos’ Bugonia Trailer

Having teamed up to Oscar-winning effect on The Favourite and Poor Things, and continued their inventive partnership in style with Kinds Of Kindness last summer, director-star duo Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone are gearing up to take us on another wild cinematic ride with sci-fi comedy Bugonia, an English-language reimagining of Korean cult classic Save The Green Planet. In the film, Stone plays a high-powered CEO who gets kidnapped by two conspiracists (Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis) who believe she’s *checks notes* an evil alien bent on destroying Earth. Now there’s a teaser trailer. Fish eye lenses, ‘Basket Case’ needle drop, Jesse Plemons keeping bees and rugby tackling Stone, and even a spot of off-kilter jump-dancing drop us right into the latest bizarro world from Yorgos Lanthimos, who’s showing no signs of suddenly turning normal on us now. And honestly, we wouldn’t have it any other way. Working from a script by The Menu writer and Succession alum Will Tracy, and teaming up with fellow weird movie aficionado — and, here, producer — Ari Aster (Beau Is Afraid), it looks like Lanthimos has everything he needs to do Joon-Hwan Jang’s 2003 banger justice. And, what’s more, while we don’t see her in this first teaser for Bugonia, Lanthimos’ latest is also set to see the filmmaker reunited with Alicia Silverstone, who made a memorable appearance in the Greek auteur’s The Killing Of A Sacred Deer back in 2017. Honestly, what more could you want?

Now, this minute(ish) long teaser doesn’t tell us an awful lot, but it does leave us with plenty of questions. Is Emma Stone really an alien? Or is she just opulent? Are Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis crazy? Or do they just know too much? And what’s with all the bees? We’ll find out the answers to those questions, and more, when Bugonia buzzes into cinemas this October.
