Five decades of shark-based terror. Of the dolly zoom. Of, “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.” Of that John Williams score. Of swimmin’ with bowlegged women. Of the Kintner boy’s yellow lilo. Of the mayor’s anchor-patterned suit. Of Brody and Hooper and Quint on the Orca. Of scar-swapping and barrel-popping. Yes, somehow it’s 50 years since Steven Spielberg unleashed Jaws – the film that made generations afraid to go in the water, that invented the summer blockbuster, and that remains categorically the greatest shark movie ever made. It’s still a front-to-back masterpiece – the head, the tail, the whole damn thing.

To mark the 50th anniversary of Jaws, this month’s issue of Empire is a massive celebration of Spielberg’s original classic, going back in the water to explore the most iconic elements of the film. Inside, we tapped up Hollywood’s finest – from Hans Zimmer and Simon Pegg, to Leigh Whannell and David Koepp – to get their insights on what makes Jaws tick, delving into Spielberg’s direction, Roy Scheider’s stellar performance, the shark itself, that legendary score, the poster art, the grizzled turn from Robert Shaw, and much more besides. It’s the ultimate tribute to a film that still thrills as much as it did 50 years ago.

This month’s newsstand cover has Bruce the shark leaping off the page, illustrated exclusively for Empire by Paul Shipper.

And the subscriber cover is also by Shipper, presenting an evocative portrait of the film as the shark swims ominously towards the Orca.

Plus, there’s plenty more inside the magazine. We take a brand up-to-date look at Tron: Ares; talk Jurassic World Rebirth with Scarlett Johansson; get rebellious with Tony Gilroy and Diego Luna on Andor Season 2; revisit the gloriously gory mayhem of the Final Destination franchise; sit down for a major career-spanning interview with Alexander Skarsgård; step into the blinding lights with The Weeknd for his wild up-to-date horror-thriller Hurry Up Tomorrow; and plunge our hands into the weird and wonderful world of novelty popcorn buckets.

It’s a killer issue that celebrates summer movies past and present – you can practically smell the salty popcorn (and the salty Amity seaside). Find it on newsstands from Thursday 10 April. Pre-order a copy online now.
