In April, 52-year-old actor Eric Dane revealed that he had been diagnosed with ALS. Dane, best known for his roles on Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, seemed confident about his future at the time: “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter,” he said in a statement. (Dane has been married to fellow actor Rebecca Gayheart since 2004; they have two teenage children.) In spite of being stricken by the neurodegenerative disease, Dane was about to return to the set of Euphoria for the third season.

Now, however, the actor has shared a few more sobering updates about his health on Good Morning America. “My right side has completely stopped working,” he told the program. Dane said that he expects to lose control of the left side as well.

Nevertheless, Dane remains hopeful. “I’m fighting as much as I can,” Dane said. “There’s so much about it that’s out of my control.” Later, he added, “In my heart I don’t feel like this is the end of me.”

Before Dane was diagnosed, he said, he noticed something was wrong when he began to experience weakness in his right hand. At the time, he didn’t pay too much attention to it; “I thought maybe I’d been texting too much or my hand was fatigued. But a few weeks later, I noticed that it had gotten a little worse, so I went to a hand specialist, who sent me to another hand specialist. Then I went to a neurologist, who sent me to another neurologist, who said, ‘This is way above my pay grade.’”

Dane revealed his diagnosis just a month after Gayheart filed for an annulment of their divorce, which she had originally filed for in 2018. Their separation never became official. “I talk to her every day,” he said. “We have managed to become better friends and better parents. And she is probably my biggest champion and my most stalwart supporter. I lean on her.” The actor also got emotional speaking about his desire to be there for his daughters: “I’m angry because my father was taken from me when I was young. And now, you know, there’s a very good chance I’m going to be taken from my girls while they’re very young.”
