“I’m a poet.” “You’re unemployed.” LuxBox has revealed a festival promo trailer for the indie film titled Un Poeta, or A Poet in English, a Colombian film from filmmaker Simón Mesa Soto as his second feature. It’s premiering at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival this month playing in the Un Certain Regards section – and I’ve been hearing good things already from my colleagues. This looks very humorous. An aging poet named Oscar finds purpose mentoring Yurlady, a talented teen, though exposing her to the poetry scene might be unwise. His own poetic pursuits led nowhere, leaving him a stereotypical undiscovered writer. “Aging and erratic, he has succumbed to the cliché of the poet in the shadows.” But that changes when he meets her. Starring Ubeimar Rios as Oscar, Rebeca Andrade as Yurlady, and Guillermo Cardona as Efrain. I can also say I’m a huge fan of the poet film Paterson, starring Adam Driver as still, unknown poet in a diminutive town – it also premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016. Even though these two films have some similarities, this one looks unique and funky in its own clever ways. I really want to watch it! Keep an eye out for it this year.
Here’s the intiial festival promo trailer for Simón Mesa Soto’s film A Poet, direct from YouTube:
Oscar Restrepo’s (starring Ubeimar Rios) obsession with poetry brought him no glory. Aging and erratic, he has succumbed to the cliché of the poet in the shadows. Meeting Yurlady (Rebeca Andrade), a teenage girl from humble roots, and helping her cultivate her talent brings some lightweight to his days, but dragging her into the world of poets may not be the way. A Poet, also known as Un Poeta originally in Spanish, is both written and directed by up-and-coming Colombian filmmaker Simón Mesa Soto, making his second film after directing Amparo previously, and a few other tiny films. Produced by Simón Mesa Soto, Manuel Ruiz Montealegre, and Juan Sarmiento G. This is premiering at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival playing in the Un Certain Regard section. No final release dates are set yet – stay tuned for updates. Who wants to watch this?
