EXCLUSIVE: Petersen Vargas’ Some Nights I Feel Like Walking is set for a local release in the Philippines and has sold to key territories.
The coming-of-age drama has received an R18 rating for its sexual content and LGBTQ+ themes and will open locally on August 27 through Black Cap Pictures, also a co-producer of the film. It follows a band of youthful male street hustlers who brave the obscure corners of the Manila night, who fulfil their friend’s last wish of bringing his body home.
“It’s a rare arthouse release especially with the landscape where cinema attendance is super down. Recently though, [Antoinette Jadaone’s] Sunshine did extremely well. The distributor is hoping that we will do well too,” says Alemberg Ang of Daluyong Studios, who produces the film along with Jade Francis Castro of Origin8 Media.
The film will be shown in about 50 cinemas in major cities such as Manila, Cebu and Davao in the Philippines. But the R18 rating hinders it from playing in some of the high-footfall family-friendly malls, Ang adds.
Sunshine, which premiered in Toronto and Berlin, is understood to be self-distributed with the aid of marketing agency Lunchbox and plays exclusively at SM Cinemas.
Through China-based sales agent Parallax Films, Some Nights I Feel Like Walking has sold to Film Movement for North America, Contre-jour Films for Francophone territories including France, Belgium, French-speaking Switzerland, and SBS for Australia.
The film is a co-production between the Philippines, Singapore and Italy, with Anthony Chen, Tan Si En and Stefano Centini as co-producers. It took part in the Cannes Atelier in 2020 and had its world premiere at Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival last year, where it won the best score award, before travelling to more than 30 international film festivals.
