Josh Gad and Kaya Scodelario are digging up a treasure trove of family secrets today in Collider’s exclusive first look at the trailer for Adulthood. The latest film to herald from habitual documentarian and co-star of the Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure franchise, Alex Winter, puts a comedic edge to an incredibly gloomy and traumatizing moment in the lives of main characters and siblings Megan (Scodelario) and Noah (Gad). In addition to the trailer, we’ve also got the exclusive debut of the poster for the film, which arrives in select theaters on September 19 with a digital release to follow on September 23.

Going back to your childhood home can be tough — especially when faced with the mortality of a loved one. Luckily, siblings Megan (Scodelario) and Noah (Gad) have one another when they make the journey back home after their mother is admitted into the hospital. While going through the hoarder-like amount of things in the basement, the pair stumble upon a grisly discovery when the skeletal remains of a dead body tumbles out of the wall. Taking matters into their own hands, the pair attempts to cover up their parents’ sinister tracks, and dumps the body in a quarry hoping this will be case closed on their nightmare. Unfortunately, the police track the remains back to them and it is — in fact — case open. Meanwhile, they’re dealing with a blackmailing scheme carried out by their mother’s caretaker (Billie Lourd), who’s asking them for money in return for her silence about a murder she claims their mother admitted to. Sticking together through hefty and skinny, Megan and Noah quickly learn that family comes first — especially when you’re dodging murder charges together.

In a statement paired with our poster and trailer reveal, Winter said:

“I’m extremely proud of this movie, and the work of our incredible cast, and have loved working in partnership with Republic Pictures. I can’t wait for audiences to see it!”
