Over the weekend, the Fantastic Four made their first steps into the MCU with… well, The Fantastic Four: First Steps. And an extensive press tour, a zingy ‘60s retrofuturistic aesthetic, the star power of Pedro Pascal, and the promise of a Fantastic Four movie done right all combined to a winning opening weekend for the film – it debuted to a global haul of roughly $218 million, a strong launch for Marvel’s First Family.

That figure is a more-or-less even split of US and international grosses – earning $118 million on home soil, and around $100 million in other territories. That’s neck-and-neck with the opening weekend of James Gunn’s Superman two weeks ago, which an initially-reported $217 million launch, later revised to $220 million. Since Superman has earned over $500 million at this point, it suggests a powerful future for The Fantastic Four: First Steps in the coming weeks – it remains to be seen if the DC film can continue to perform strongly with major Marvel competition now on its heels.

First Steps’ figure is the biggest opening for a Marvel movie this year – ahead of Captain America: Brave New World’s $192 million, and Thunderbolts*’ $162 million. But since those two projects both underperformed in the long run, stay tuned for whether The Fantastic Four displays long stretchy legs through the rest of the summer.
