“Locals only. Don’t live here, don’t surf here.” Lionsgate has revealed an official trailer for The Surfer, the latest film from genre filmmaker Lorcan Finnegan, best known for his freaky sci-fi film Vivarium a few years ago. The Surfer premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival last year in the Midnight section. Nicolas Cage stars as “The Surfer”, an American who grew up in Australia surfing at a local beach. When he returns to his beach side hometown in Australia, he is humiliated in front of his son by a local group of surfers who claim ownership over the secluded beach of his childhood. He ends up stuck there at the beach, as intense heat bears down and he continues to battle all of the surf bros who constantly make fun of him. This also has Julian McMahon, Nicholas Cassim, Miranda Tapsell, Alexander Bertrand, Rahel Romahn, with Justin Rosniak, and Finn Little. This is kind of a contemporary Falling Down, though the whole film is also a metaphor for how clique-like society is these days. I’m a substantial fan of this film – my Cannes review is quoted on the poster and in this trailer. It’s not what most are expecting, totally crazy & weird, still a damn good film.

A man (starring Nicolas Cage as “The Surfer”) returns to the idyllic beach of his childhood to surf with his son, but is humiliated by a group of powerful locals and drawn into a conflict that rises with the punishing heat of the summer and pushes him right to his final breaking point. The Surfer is directed by Irish genre filmmaker Lorcan Finnegan, director of the films Without Name, Vivarium, and Nocebo previously, plus many other miniature films. The screenplay is written by Thomas Martin. It’s produced by Nicolas Cage, Robert Connolly, Brunella Cocchiglia, Leonora Darby, James Grandison, James Harris, and Nathan Klingher. This initially premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival last year (read our review). Lionsgate will debut Lorcan Finnegan’s The Surfer film in US theaters starting May 2nd, 2025 coming up this spring. Want to watch?
