Two years ago, Blumhouse got in on the game-to-movie boom with its massive screen adaptation of Five Nights At Freddy’s – the horror game (particularly beloved by younger players) that brings eerie animatronic mascots to murderous life. It was a considerable financial hit, and so Freddy Fazbear and co are officially back – not, sadly, in ‘Six Nights At Freddy’s’, nor ‘Five Nights At Freddies’s’. No, it’s simply Five Nights At Freddy’s 2, delving further into the extensive lore of the games, bringing back several characters from the first film, and busting those marauding maniacs out of the restaurant. Watch the trailer:
This second chapter takes place a year after the first film – with Josh Hutcherson’s Mike and Elizabeth Lail’s Vanessa still reeling from their slice-n-dice encounter at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, which has since become a local urban legend (even inspiring a kooky modern town event, ‘Fazfest’). But when Mike’s little sister Abby (Piper Rubio) gets modern messages from her robo-pals, it kicks off a modern set of spooky events that will bring Freddy, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy out into the world. The film comes from returning director Emma Tammi, and is written by game creator Scott Cawthon – so expect plenty of Freddy easter eggs.
Joining the cast this time are the likes of Mckenna Grace, Wayne Knight, Freddy Carter – and, perhaps most importantly to horror fans, Skeet Ulrich. Given that Matthew Lillard is returning as William Afton, that makes for something of an original Scream ghostface reunion. Nobody go down to the basement!
Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 comes to cinemas on 5 December – curiously skipping the Halloween release window. Here’s hoping it proves a more box office-friendly robo-sequel for Blumhouse than the entertaining but underperforming M3GAN 2.0.
