“The star of the show should always be the porridge itself. Just let the oats sing!” Dogwoof has revealed the official trailer for a Scottish documentary film titled The Golden Spurtle, set in the quaint little town of Carrbridge in the Scotland Highlands. The film is set for a release in the UK this September, but still has no US date yet. It premiered at the 2025 CPH:DOX Film Festival and has appeared at a few other festivals as well. Welcome to the Porridge World Cup. Each year the sleepy highland village of Carrbridge awakens with excitement as locals and competitors from around the globe vie for the honor of winning the coveted “The Golden Spurtle” in the World Porridge Making Championships. A film all about oatmeal! Believe it or not! If you’re wondering what a “spurtle” is, it’s a wooden object that is the time-honored kitchen utensil used to stir the porridge while it’s cooking. The award is a golden version of this humorous wooden stick. I’ve seen this film (via CPH:DOX) and it’s actually quite entertaining, capturing all the kookiness and amusement that comes from an event called the World Porridge Championships. Even if you don’t enjoy oatmeal, still a fun watch.

Here’s the official UK trailer for Constantine Costi’s doc The Golden Spurtle, direct from YouTube:

The Golden Spurtle Doc Trailer

Did you know that you have to stir clockwise when you stir your oatmeal? Otherwise you’re letting the devil into your porridge. Everyone knows – at least in the village of Carrbridge in the Scottish Highlands. For 30 years the town has hosted the World Porridge Championships. This year it’s a special event because it’s the last time Charlie Miller will be in charge of the festivities. His health is failing, and now it’s time for the warm-hearted Scotsman to pass on the spurtle. We are with Charlie and the deeply dedicated World Cup competitors in the weeks leading up to and during the championships, where an incredible cast of characters make culinary creations out of oatmeal, water and salt. The Golden Spurtle is directed by international theater director / filmmaker Constantine Costi, director of the film A Delicate Fire as well. Produced by Rebecca Lamond & John Archer. This initially premiered at the 2025 CPH:DOX Film Festival earlier this year. Dogwoof will debut Costi’s The Golden Spurtle doc in UK cinemas starting on September 12th, 2025 coming soon – visit the film’s official site. No US release date has been set. Anyone interested?
