Deadpool & Wolverine: What Happened to Gambit?

A Rough Spell for Marvel, a Bright Future for the X-Men

After a rough spell in recent times for Marvel Studios, Shawn Levy’s mutant team-up Deadpool & Wolverine has put the MCU back on form in some style, earning the adulation of fans — and a record-breaking $1.2 billion at the global box office. But whilst we’ve had over a month (and an epic Spoiler Special podcast) to process the movie’s meta flourishes, mega cameos, and myriad references, one question above all others has lingered on our minds: What happened to Channing Tatum’s Ragin’ Cajun Gambit?

And now, thanks to a clip shared by star Ryan Reynolds on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, we have our answer. Check it out below:

In the clip, we see Tatum’s Remy LeBeau, roaming a post-punch-up The Void battlefield, crack a smile as he looks up towards a Marvel Sparkle Circle (aka a one-way ticket to the MCU’s Earth-616.) And although this scene technically *isn’t* a deleted one (eagle-eyed viewers can see Gambit’s getaway on a TVA screen during Deadpool & Wolverine’s big climax), Reynolds sharing it in all its glory with our man Channing front and centre feels significant.

For one, it’s concrete confirmation that this version of Gambit — already a fan-favourite among the movie’s wealth of character cameos — is still alive and kicking; and for two, with Tatum himself having already revealed that he’s had conversations with Kevin Feige about a second outing as the New Orleans mutie, you can’t help feeling this well-timed social media, er, gambit has been made to put the Blink Twice star in pole position to become the MCU’s LeBeau at least one more time.

New Developments: X-23, Elektra, and Blade’s Futures

And though the fates of Jennifer Garner’s Elektra and Wesley Snipes’ Blade remain unconfirmed as of yet, we do at least know that X-23/Laura, aka Dafne Keen — who Empire recently sat down to chat all things DP & Wolvie with — also made it through Deadpool and Wolverine’s tangle with Cassandra Nova. So could we already have our new Wolverine and the MCU’s Gambit in the bag already here? Only time will tell. But after all those years where it seemed we may never get to see his card tricks on the big screen, it certainly looks like Channing Tatum isn’t quite finished playing his hand as the Ragin’ Cajun just yet. We guess what we’re trying to say is, woohesbouttamakeanameforhimselfere!

Conclusion

The future of the X-Men looks bright, with Channing Tatum’s Gambit likely to make a return appearance in the MCU. But what about the fates of Elektra and Blade? Only time will tell.
