EXCLUSIVE: GKids has acquired all North American rights to the 4K restoration of 2005 Japanese comedy drama Linda Linda Linda ahead of its 20th anniversary screening at Tribeca Festival on June 8.
Nobuhiro Yamashita directed the film about an all-girl group that needs to learn a song before the school’s festival. Bae Doona from The Host and Broker, Aki Maeda from Battle Royale, Yu Kashii from Death Note, and Shiori Sekine from the band Base Ball Bear star.
Kōsuke Mukai, Wakako Miyashita, and Nobuhiro Yamashita co-wrote the screenplay, and the producers are Hiroyuki Negishi and Yuji Sadai.
Linda Linda Linda will be re-released in Japanese cinemas on August 22. GKids will open the film in confined theatrical release in North America for the first time later this year, followed by home entertainment release.
This is the company’s second collaboration with director Yamashita after Ghost Cat Anzu, which Yamashita co-directed alongside Yoko Kuno.
Rodney Uhler of Gkids negotiated the Linda Linda Linda deal with Sayaka Ito of Bitters End.
