EXCLUSIVE: Cannes Directors’ Fortnight selection Lucky Lu has landed sales representation, with Global Constellation taking international rights in one of its first acquisitions since the merger between Film Constellation and Global Screen. WME Independent handles North America.

Lloyd Lee Choi’s feature directorial debut is described as a tense 48-hour journey through the underbelly of New York City where delivery driver Lu’s world unravels when his bike and sole source of income gets stolen.

With his long-separated family arriving imminently from Asia, Lu races to recover what belongs to him, navigating a fractured community and a system that has left him behind.

Lucky Lu stars Chang Chen (Dune, The Grandmaster) alongside Fala Chen (Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire) and newcomer Carabelle Manna.

The producer roster includes Destin Daniel Cretton, whose directing credits include Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings and Short Term 12, alongside Nina Yang Bongiovi (Sorry To Bother You), Asher Goldstein (Short Term 12), Tony Yang (Blue Sun Palace, Same Old), Ron Najor (Short Term 12), and Jeyun Munford (Cretton’s upcoming ninja action title Naruto).

Lucky Lu is produced by Hisako Films, Significant Productions, Cedar Road, and Big Buddha Pictures, in association with AUM Group, Taiwan Mobile, Peng Zhao Group, and Gold House.

Choi said, “Global Constellation is a dream collaborator, and we have long admired their incredible taste in cinema as well as their dedication to new filmmakers.”

The feature expands on US-based Korean-Canadian filmmaker Choi’s live-action low Same Old, which premiered in the low film competition at Cannes 2022, earned an honourable mention at TIFF, and was named best low film at Raindance. His 2023 low Closing Dynasty won the Generation Kplus – best low film award in Berlin in 2023, among other accolades from SXSW and AFI Fest.

Global Constellation is the international sales and financing arm of the pan-European Vuelta Group and arises from Vuelta’s acquisition of Fabien Westerhoff’s UK-based sales company Film Constellation that was announced this week. Film Constellation’s operations have merged with Global Screen, the German-based international sales outfit that is part of Vuelta’s collection of sales companies, the Playtime Group.
