Liza Marshall, the UK producer of Chloe Zhao’s festival award-winner Hamnet, starring Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal, is the latest high-profile speaker to join the Screen Summit, taking place at the BFI Southbank on September 30.
Marshall has just returned from the Toronto International Film Festival where Hamnet won the prestigious TIFF People’s Choice award, catapulting the film into this year’s award season.
Based on the novel by Maggie O’Farrell, Hamnet follows Agnes and William Shakespeare, as they grieve for the loss of their son. The drama premiered in Telluride and will open through Focus Features in the US on November 27.
Marshall will join Element Pictures’ Ed Guiney and See-Saw Films’ Iain Canning on The Trailblazers panel, where each will discuss building a successful UK production company and navigating the challenges of life as an independent film producer.
Since launching Hera Pictures in 2017, Marshall has built the company into a film and TV powerhouse with credits including Mahalia Belo’s The End We Start From, and TV series I Fought The Law, Mary And George, and What It Feels Like For A Girl.
Before Hera, Marshall worked as head of drama at Channel 4 and enjoyed a stint as the head of Scott Free Productions UK where she oversaw films including Get Santa and Before I Go To Sleep.
The second annual Screen Summit, called ’Building on the UK’s Global Success’, will bring together producers, financiers and distributors for a day of full and frank discussion about how the UK indie film sector can amplify its success in the global market.
