Hayden Panettiere (Scream VI) is digging back into her horror roots with Collider’s exclusive first look at Lionsgate’s A Breed Apart. Set for a theatrical, digital, and on-demand release on May 16, the carnage-filled horror comedy is the latest to come from brotherly directorial duo, Griff and Nathan Furst — known collectively as The Furst Brothers. Using social media as a foundation, the movie builds an ominous and thrilling story with the lend a hand of its lineup of talent which, along with Panettiere, also includes Grace Caroline Currey (the Shazam! film series), Virginia Gardner (Beautiful Disaster), Riele Downs (Darby and the Dead), Page Kennedy (Blue Mountain State), Zak Steiner (Jessica Jones), Joey Bragg (Liv and Maddie), and Troy Gentile (The Goldbergs).

Giving us a bit of backstory, the opening sequences of today’s official trailer for A Breed Apart turn the clocks back 15 years and unveils the chaos and brutal massacre that befell a Hollywood production. The cast and crew were shooting on an island when the animal trainers lost control of the dogs, which drove the animals into a feeding frenzy. Picking up in the present day, we get down to the meat of the movie, which will follow a group of influencers who have charted a course for the island and are pitted against one another in a competition that involves wrangling the killer canines. Although no one is really interested in hunting wild German shepherds, they have no choice as they quickly turn from hunters to hunted.

If the plot of A Breed Apart sounds a tad bit familiar, that’s because the bones of the story were taken from the Wes Craven-produced 2006 feature, The Breed. The movie, which was directed by Nicholas Mastandrea, was about a group of friends and family members who travel to a remote island only to discover they’re being stalked by a pack of ravenous dogs. Despite the backing of the Scream and A Nightmare on Elm Street director, as well as a cast that included Michelle Rodriguez, Taryn Manning, and Eric Lively, The Breed was a major miss, chowing down on Rotten Tomatoes with a 27% critics’ approval rating.

‘A Breed Apart’s Big Reunion

Along with the connection between The Breed and A Breed Apart, and Panettiere’s previous working relationship with the former’s producer on Scream 4, there’s one more reunion at play. Leading ladies, Currey and Gardner, pair up with not only one another for the survival thriller but also with Lionsgate, as the trio previously joined forces on 2022’s Fall. The Scott Mann-directed project falls in a very similar vein to A Breed Apart, and sees the leading ladies fight for their lives after a climbing expedition goes horribly wrong. The title also featured performances from Mason Gooding (Heart Eyes) and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Supernatural).
